Crafting a Custom Outdoor Sanctuary

This project centered on a complex residential exterior in Ohio, where the homeowners wanted a refined outdoor space for gatherings with family across generations. While most contractors said the house’s many angled walls would mean tearing down and rebuilding parts of the home to add a roof, the Pergola X proved you don’t need that level of disruption. Instead, the system’s modular design allowed the team to contour the structure to fit the home’s unique 45-degree angles without making any changes to the existing walls. The result is a seamless connection from indoors to outdoors—a durable, weather-ready retreat that feels like it was always part of the home.

"We were told by several contractors that the only way to get the shade we wanted was to replace an entire exterior wall of our home."

The Challenge:
Working with Unique Angles

The main challenge was working with a non-linear floor plan—a back wall with eight separate 45-degree angles. Most shade solutions are built for straight, flat walls, so Keith and Barb were told by other contractors that their only real option removing a portion of the home’s primary exterior wall to structurally integrate a new roofline. For the homeowners, this was a non-starter; they sought the utility of a covered space without the “major renovation” price tag or the disruption of a structural overhaul.

Beyond the tricky installation, the homeowners dealt with a completely open patio that was often blinding with direct sunlight, too windy, or completely unusable during frequent Ohio rainstorms. Because of the weather, this beautiful square footage sat empty for much of the year.

The Solution:
A Precision Fit Without Demolition

The Pergola X was chosen for its ability to handle tricky spaces without major construction. Rather than forcing the house to fit the structure, the StruXure team designed the pergola to fit the house—down to every angle. Precision mitered corners let the frame hug all eight of the home’s 45-degree turns, with no need to change or tear down existing walls. To give the finished space a polished, finished feel, they added stacked cornice trim around the perimeter, turning what could have been an engineering challenge into a natural design highlight. The result is a shaded outdoor space that feels original to the home, both in look and function.

To blend the sleek new aluminum structure with the classic brick masonry, they added stacked cornices. This clever detail hides the complex joints and makes the angles look like a planned design feature. The result is a structure that looks like it was written right into the home’s original blueprints.

"Adding the stacked cornices wasn't just about finishing the edges—it was about making those complex angles 'pop' and look like a deliberate, high-end architectural choice."

Technical Features

“I know there were a lot of different angles that they had to figure out manually… they took their time and did a quality job.”
— Keith Meyer, Owner

  • Precision Pivot 6 louvers: Offer a full range of motion, so you can let sunlight in or close things up for total rain protection. The built-in gutter system guides water away, so the space stays comfortable even during a downpour.
  • Advanced Miter Engineering: The frame is made from carefully cut sections designed to follow the home’s eight 45-degree turns, giving solid support without sacrificing the look or strength.
  • Integrated Retractable Screens: Motorized screens slide down when you need to block the wind or create a little privacy but don’t get in the way of the view.
  • Architectural Cornice Detail: Layered trim wraps the entire perimeter to hide the gutter system and add a finished, classic touch that fits right in with the house’s style.
  • Concealed Fasteners: All the nuts, bolts, and mounting hardware are hidden inside the pergola, keeping the look clean, polished, and modern.

The Results: The Design Verdict

Engineered for Complex Homes

The pergola was carefully designed to match the home’s unique shape, with every angle measured and fitted, so there was no need to change the original structure.

A Flexible Outdoor Retreat

With motorized screens and adjustable louvers, the patio isn’t just a porch anymore—it’s a weather-ready space that adapts to whatever the day brings, offering shade, rain protection, and privacy on demand.

Seamless Style

Custom finishes and classic trim details help the pergola blend in beautifully, making it feel like a true extension of the home rather than an afterthought.

Year-Round Living

Combining built-in heaters with automated screens turns the patio into a comfortable room you can use in all four seasons, keeping you warm even during chilly Midwestern winds.

Beautiful Upgrades

Details like the stacked cornices and custom lighting make this much more than just a pergola—it’s a high-end extension of the home.

“Now, we don’t just have a patio; we have an extra room for our grandchildren to play in. It’s become our favorite spot to watch a passing rain storm while staying completely dry.”

– Keith Meyer, Owner

The Lifestyle Shift:
From Patio to Everyday Retreat

The change from a basic patio to a true “outdoor room” has made a real difference in daily life for Keith and Barb. What used to be a space that sat empty whenever the weather was bad has become the heart of their home—ready for family barbecues, grandkids running around, or just quiet moments watching the rain. The adjustable screens and louvers mean this is a spot everyone uses, no matter the season. Whether they’re sharing a sunny brunch or staying cozy while a storm rolls in, or opening up the louvers at night for start gazing, the new setup gives the whole family more time together outdoors, all year long.
