Overview

A Seamless Architectural Extension

This project represents the pinnacle of outdoor architectural integration, transforming an expansive, exposed deck into a sophisticated “outdoor great room.” Utilizing the Pergola XL System, the design focuses on scaling the structure to match the home’s significant two-story profile. The result is a seamless extension of the interior living space that provides full climate autonomy—from solar shading and ventilation to recessed heating for cooler evenings.

The collaboration between StruXure and Platinum Decking has produced a structure that doesn’t just sit on the deck but anchors the entire backyard aesthetic.

The Challenge:
Architectural Scale and Exposure

The primary challenge of this site was twofold: environmental exposure and visual scale. Prior to the installation, the elevated deck was subject to intense sun during the day and lacked protection from the elements, rendering it unusable during rain or in cooler temperatures.

Architecturally, the large, two-story blue siding of the home required an outdoor structure with enough visual presence to feel intentional rather than like an afterthought. A standard umbrella or lightweight gazebo would have been dwarfed by the home’s proportions and failed to provide the year-round utility the homeowners desired.

The Solution:
The Pergola XL System

Pergola XL System

The Pergola XL was selected as the definitive solution for its ability to bridge the gap between a permanent roof and an open-air deck. StruXure’s Pergola XL was engineered to span further and handle three times more rain water than our industry-leading Pergola X design.

Dual-tone Finish

The design team opted for a sophisticated dual-tone finish: a Black frame to echo the deck’s modern railings and window trim, contrasted with lighter louvers to keep the space underneath feeling bright and airy even when closed.

Dual-zone Configuration

This XL System was configured to span the significant width of the seating area, providing a massive footprint of protection. This configuration allows the homeowners to pivot the louvers to track the sun, provide 100% rain management, or open fully to embrace the blue sky.

Technical Features
Precision Engineering for Modern Living

  • Precision Pivot 6 Technology: The louvers offer a full range of motion, allowing for precise light filtration and air induction.
  • Recessed Heating: Unlike bulky aftermarket heaters, these units are flush-mounted into the structural beams for a clean, architectural finish that provides 240V of radiant warmth.
  • Integrated Power Management: All wiring for the dual fans, recessed lighting, and chandelier is hidden within the internal extrusions, maintaining the system’s minimalist aesthetic.
  • Advanced Water Management: An integrated gutter system within the beams ensures that during rain, water is channeled invisibly through the posts and away from the living area.
  • Custom Lighting Circuits: Independent control of the recessed cans and the central chandelier allows for “scene setting,” transitioning from high-visibility task lighting to low-ambiance evening glows.

The Design Verdict

Architectural Integrity

The Pergola X acts as a structural extension of the home. The black powder-coated finish and heavy-duty extrusions provide the strong visual presence necessary to complement a luxury two-story residence, enhancing the home’s overall aesthetic.

The “Interior-Out” Philosophy

By integrating recessed lighting, modern fans, and a central chandelier, this project blurs the line between indoors and out. It treats the deck as a primary living room, utilizing high-end lighting and furniture to mirror the luxury found inside the home.

All-Season Enjoyment

Equipped with both high-output fans for summer and recessed platinum heaters for cooler weather, this structure ensures the outdoor space can be enjoyed throughout the year, regardless of the Midwestern climate.

The Lifestyle Shift:
From Deck to Destination

The “after” visuals reveal more than just a renovation; they show a lifestyle evolution. The space has moved away from being a transitional patio and has become the home’s social epicenter. With the curved, communal seating centered under the Pergola X, the deck is now a multi-functional sanctuary. It is a morning coffee retreat, a sheltered afternoon workspace, and a high-end evening lounge.

The transition from a bright, sun-drenched day to a warmly lit, heated evening proves that with StruXure, the environment finally adapts to the homeowner—not the other way around.
