Lenbrook Living Community needed a comprehensive shade solution that could span sprawling rooftop event spaces, active recreation areas, and intimate courtyards. By implementing customized aluminum pergolas, the community successfully bridged the gap between beautiful landscaping and practical, everyday usability.

Even the most beautifully designed landscapes lose their appeal when the elements refuse to cooperate. Before this campus transformation, Lenbrook’s outdoor areas were heavily constrained by local weather conditions.
The community envisioned vibrant outdoor hubs that would encourage social interaction and physical activity. However, the rooftop amenity space was often far too hot for comfortable use on sunny afternoons. The Croquet Lawn, designed to be a centerpiece of resident activity, saw significantly reduced use under the intense Georgia sun. Even the property’s intimate courtyard felt less inviting during less-than-perfect weather.

Mechanical equipment on the second floor, which was absolutely critical to the building’s operations, remained entirely exposed. This created a visual distraction from dining and residential vantage points, detracting from the tranquil ambiance.

Adding heavy structures to existing rooftops meant the engineering solutions had to meet highly stringent safety and structural standards while maintaining a refined aesthetic vision.

The team brought deep experience managing large-scale projects, providing design guidance, engineering documentation, and on-site support. Stamped and signed engineering drawings ensured code compliance, while close coordination with the architect and general contractor helped keep the project on schedule and on budget. A prior Lunch & Learn presentation had already introduced the architectural firm to StruXure’s capabilities — a connection that would prove invaluable as the project moved forward.
Smart Configuration
The new structures feature premium powder-coated aluminum construction that beautifully complements Lenbrook’s luxury positioning. Rather than looking like after-market additions, the pergolas function as natural, permanent extensions of the architecture.
No two areas of the campus required the same approach. The rooftop dining and event space received a sprawling 1,681 sq. ft. Pergola XL system, immediately transforming it into a year-round gathering space.
The courtyard retreats were outfitted with four traditional pergolas featuring fixed beams and solid coverings, offering deeply shaded, intimate spaces for quiet reflection. For the Croquet Lawn, two 382 sq. ft. Pivot 6 XL pergolas were installed. When it became apparent that the late-afternoon western sun still penetrated the space, the Commercial Direct team collaborated with management to add manually operated louvered sidewalls, proving that responsive design is essential to optimal usability.
On the rooftop, a massive 1,342 sq. ft. Pergola XL was paired with 328 sq. ft. of vertical slat walls specifically to hide mechanical equipment. The result is a highly functional structure that enhances the visual landscape while maintaining proper airflow and maintenance access.

Furthermore, stamped and signed engineering drawings ensured total code compliance for the complex rooftop installations.
- Material Durability: Constructed from heavy-gauge, extruded aluminum, the systems are designed to withstand high winds, heavy rain, and the relentless southern sun without rusting, warping, or rotting.
- Climate Integration: The addition of manually operated louvered sidewalls on the Croquet Lawn exemplifies site-specific climate integration. Residents can adjust the sidewalls based on the exact time of day, filtering out harsh glare while maintaining a comfortable playing environment.
